Help Fund the Cure

You can help support Chris Elliott Fund’s efforts to ensure that every brain tumor patient receives advanced treatment, genomic and DNA testing of their live brain tumor tissue sample, and that every physician consistently refers patients to brain tumor centers of excellence immediately after diagnosis and that cutting-edge research continues to extend lives and continue progress towards a cure.

CEF seeks to raise $3 million over the next five years for these initiatives. Following are examples of how you can help brain cancer patients in need:

$35,000 will launch the Physician Education Pilot Program in the Puget Sound Region.

$70,000 will partially fund the Integrative Patient Support Program and Integrative Patient Support Specialist at a Brain Tumor Center of Excellence for one year.

$125,000 will establish a national brain tumor awareness campaign.

$500,000 fully funds the following:

• Funds the expansion of the Chris Elliott Fund Awareness Program to a national level
• Funds three Integrative Patient support Programs at Brain Tumor Centers of Excellence such as Dana Farber Cancer Institute
• Funds testing to identify the subset of drugs developed for other tumors that might prove effective for brain cancer.

$1,000,000 will fund Avastin research for sensitivity and resistance, and why it stops working after approximately 8 months

$2,000,000 develops new drug therapies and funds a new “genetically informed” clinical trial with a new class of drugs.

• There are over 120 different types of brain tumors. This makes accurate diagnosis and effective treatment complicated.


• Unlike some other cancers, brain tumors do not discriminate against gender, ethnicity, age, or socioeconomic status.


• Even individuals that appear to be in excellent physical shape can get a brain tumor.


• Although often not discussed, brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related deaths for children under the age of 19.


• Glioblastoma is the most dangerous form of cancer. Generally, patients survive three months to two and a half years after diagnosis.


• Glioblastoma strikes an average 22,000 Americans a year.

The Chris Elliott Fund (CEF) has a patient-centered focus and is dedicated to providing support to patients and their loved ones living with brain cancer. We strive to educate doctors about the urgency of advanced treatment for newly diagnosed primary brain tumor patients especially glioblastoma. CEF invests critical funds in cutting edge brain cancer research to help patients live longer and move closer to finding a cure.

Integrative Patient Support Program

The Chris Elliott Fund created the unique and pioneering position of the Integrative Patient Support Specialist in May 2009 for patient care. The Integrative Patient Support Specialist works directly with brain tumor patients giving them emotional support, help with insurance coverage, offering employment and financial solutions and many other needs. A Brain Tumor Support Group for survivors and loved ones is an integral part of the program. CEF has also developed and funded two new support groups—for bereavement and caregivers—which began in May 2010. This program is in partnership with The Ben and Catherine Ivy Center for Advanced Brain Tumor Treatment (Swedish Neuroscience Institute in Seattle). Swedish Hospital has recently adopted CEF’s Integrated Patient Support Program Model and will replicate its success in their primary institutes of health for cancer, heart,

Patient Outreach and Advocacy Support Program

The Chris Elliott Fund provides free support services for brain tumor patients and caregivers. The program centers on an individualized approach for each patient on treatment options, referrals to advanced brain tumor treatment centers and second opinions. This program also educates physicians about brain tumors and provides them referral resources for advanced treatment centers.

Last year CEF Patient Advocates directly helped 700 brain cancer patients in only nine-months. In 2010 the need for direct patient support is expected to grow as more people are diagnosed with primary brain tumors and become aware of our services.

Public Awareness Campaign

The Chris Elliott Fund will unveil a public awareness campaign for brain cancer in the spring of 2010 including a national rollout including TV advertising and PSAs. In addition, Jean Smart, CEF Board Member and Emmy Award Winning Actress, will bring brain cancer out of the shadows and into the light and educate the public about brain cancer - recognizing the symptoms and knowing about advanced treatment options in order to save lives. Funding our awareness campaign is key.

Cutting Edge Research

The Chris Elliott Fund established the Christopher Stewart Elliott Neuro-oncology Lab for Glioblastoma and has been a leader in funding key scientific research by world-renowned researchers at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Their breakthrough work on Glioblastoma has added years to patients lives and driven a new gene based methodology for diagnosis and treatment. This research led to the discovery of subclasses of Glioblastoma and has forever changed the way brain tumors are treated worldwide. The funding focus in 2010 is to support clinical trials that improve response rates to promising primary brain tumor treatment therapies, new drug development in order to customize each patient’s brain cancer treatment therapies.
