Top 5 Achievements in 2007

1.

Medical Advances

Funded ground-breaking research in the Christopher S. Elliott Neuro-Oncology Lab for Glioblastoma Brain Cancer Research at the Dana-Farber Institute:  provided the "seed" genomic data that enabled the launch of a broad and comprehensive effort to understand the genetic alterations in Glioblastoma (GBM) in The Cancer Genome Atlas Project (TCGA); enabled the discovery of the RTK co-activation paradigm, setting the stage for profile directed combination therapies; supported clinical research including a trial of Avastin with CPT-11 that for the first time in the past 20 years increased response and survival in patients with recurrent Glioblastomas.

2.

Education and Support

Helped countless GBM patients and their families through educating, assisting and advocating that they get additional opinions from a nationally-recognized brain tumor center (NBTC), where research, treatment options and knowledge are undeniably superior to a local hospital or health care provider.

3.

Advocacy

Lobbied in Washington, DC during National Brain Tumor Action Week for an increase in funding to the National Institutes of Health; urged Congress to express their support for brain tumor SPOREs (Specialized Programs for Research Excellence) and lobbied for support for H.R. 154 - ending the Medicare Disability Waiting Period Act of 2007.

4.

Donations

Raised $80,000 for brain cancer research in support of the Christopher S. Elliott Neuro-Oncology Lab and the Applied Cancer Center at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, bringing the total donaged over six years to more than $330,000!  Donate Now!

5.

Awareness

Increased awareness of high-grade Astrocytomas, Glioblastoma brain cancer and CEF with the help of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck.  Matt made the connection between CEF on the West coast and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Jim Fund Golf program on the East coast with TV and radio public service announcement that aired this past fall.  Thank you Matt!
