About the Chris Elliott Fund

The Chris Elliott Fund for Glioblastoma Research (CEF) is a non-profit organization that raises funds specifically aimed at ending brain cancer through education, awareness, advocacy and research. CEF has raised more than $1 million for brain cancer research across the country and provides countless resources, information and support to people living with the disease. CEF funds groundbreaking research in the Christopher S. Elliott Neuro-oncology Lab for Glioblastoma Brain Research and Applied Science Center at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. The organization has developed and is currently funding the Integrative Patient Support Program at the Ben and Catherine Ivy Center for Advanced Brain Tumor Treatment in Seattle's Swedish Neuroscience Institute. CEF’s Patient Outreach and Advocacy Committee provides education and awareness for patients and physicians nationwide.

History

At age 39, in the prime of his life and father of two young children, Chris Elliott, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and given just one year to live. He and his family refused to give up until they found better treatment options outside of standard protocol. Chris enrolled in a groundbreaking Dana Farber Cancer Institute clinical trial and received the latest in brain cancer treatment and fought a two year battle to beat the disease. In his final months, Chris felt empowered to help others who are diagnosed with brain cancer and he wanted all prospective patients to know all the quality options available, thus the Chris Elliott Fund was formed. Seven years later, through Dellann Elliott’s hard work & many dedicated volunteers' work, Chris' legacy lives on through this foundation.

Mission

The mission of the Chris Elliott Fund is simple. We need to raise funds and end brain cancer via the four following steps:

  • Education
  • Awareness
  • Advocacy
  • Research

Structure

The organization uses a community based volunteer-driven model to reach the maximum audience for outreach. This way the majority of funds go to our mission, rather than supporting a large overhead structure. CEF has a medical advisory Board of Directors comprised of the leading doctors for brain cancer in the US. CEF's advisors include:

  • Dr. Ronald DePinho, Director of the Center for Applied Cancer Science at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston
  • Dr. Lynda Chin, Associate Professor, Department of Medical oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston
  • Dr. Patrick Wen, Clinical Director, Dana Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center
  • Dr. Greg Foltz, Director of the Ivy Center for Advanced Brain Tumor Treatment, Seattle and John W. Henson, MD, FAAN, Director of Neurology at the Swedish Neuroscience Institute and Medical Director, Advanced Brain Tumor Treatment (CABTT)

Fundraising Initiatives

CEF funding comes from a variety of areas throughout the community and beyond. Corporate Sponsors and Partners, Grants and Awards, and individual donations helps us fulfill our mission - to end brain cancer. In addition to engaging in fundraising initiatives throughout the year, CEF's signature fundraising events are the Chris Elliott Golf Classic & the Gray Ribbon Gala Dinner & Benefit Auction. Other events include the Bike for Brain Cancer, Seattle Brain Cancer Walk partner (join Team CEF and walk with us), community outreach, and sponsored events.

Glioblastoma Facts at a Glance

Glioblastomas(GBM) or a "Grade IV" Astrocytoma comprise 23% of primary brain tumors in the U.S., and are the most commonly diagnosed brain tumor in adults aged 45-74. Men are more frequently diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme than women, although this disease does not discriminate. GBM infiltrates into surrounding brain tissue making it extremely difficult to treat. Average survival rate of a GBM is just 12 to 15 months, with few patients surviving longer than three years. GBM is considered one of the deadliest of human cancers. Approximately 22,000 people will be diagnosed and approximately 13,000 will die from Glioblastoma this year alone. It is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children under the age of 19. Currently, there is no known cure for the disease.
